1. Plan what you will take. Vanesa Travieso, guru of order and disciple of Marie Kondo, recommends preparing a realistic list in advance. Ask yourself two questions: where am I going? And, for how many days? You can download free applications such as Google Keep and Evernote to include items as you remember them. To get everything in your carry-on bag, organize your clothes and shoes according to the planned activities. Include electronic equipment, chargers, toiletries, documents, bank cards and medicines that you will need.
2. Check the weather. Ceci de Viaje, the famous youtuber advises not to assume that there will be sun if it’s summer. Check in advance if you need to include waterproof clothing in your carry-on luggage. Unforeseen events cause expenses that can be avoided with a little caution.
3. Do not always travel with the same suitcase. Choose according to the maximum dimensions that the transport company admits and according to the type of trip. The suitcases with wheels are practical because of the space they offer and ideal for stable floors. The backpack is functional if you plan to make routes that involve climbing the train, the subway or hiking on unstable ground.
4. Folding is an art. There are three folding systems that specialists recommend when packing. These are: the military style (rolled up), the Marie Kondo method (vertical folded) and the bundle packing. Check them and choose the one that has more affinity with your wardrobe and your style.
5. Organize the space. Former flight attendant Anita, in her blog Azul Místico, recommends the technique of cubes. Use organizer bags to improve volume and protection of clothing, shoes and objects. This includes fabric, plastic and even vacuum bags. You will turn your carry-on luggage into a tetris, which will make it very easy to fit your stuff.
6. The four previous systems are based on premises promoted by the expert in packing luggage, Judith Gilford. She innovated on the subject with her book Secrets of the Carry-on Traveler, in which she explains folding and the use of compartments. The main concepts are that wrinkles can be avoided and that everything that is necessary does fit.
Pack strategic solutions
7. Imagine a lightweight carry-on luggage. It is not necessary to travel with a lot of clothes, just make sure you keep them clean. Use products such as Wayakit, an ecological and hypoallergenic spray that removes food stains and odors, blood, rust, cigarettes and sweat. This innovation was launched by two female entrepreneurs and frequent travelers. Their knowledge in environmental science and engineering allowed them to create a simple and hygienic solution that is very useful.
8. A common accident that affects clothing is the spill of shampoo, gel, oils and makeup powders. It is not enough to use bags with airtight seal, vibration and pressure can open them. Use cotton to eliminate the space between the shadows and the lids. Whatthechic a famous youtuber recommends making tiny and artisanal packaging with straws. Fill them with toothpaste, rinse or soap, and close the ends with masking tape. This size is ideal for the cabin suitcase.
9. If you have liquids in your carry-on luggage, remember that airports are governed by strict international rules. They should go in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) and not exceed one liter. Perfumes may be in glass bottles, but they must meet the weight standard. The Mundukos YouTube channel offers interesting recommendations to lighten the space. For example, travel with sunscreen powder and dry shampoo. For safety reasons, lotions and larger products must go in check-in-luggage.
10. Medicines are exempt from liquid restrictions at airports. Agent Katy points out on her YouTube portal that the 100 ml container standard does not apply to them. But keep them in sealed plastic bags. Although sharp items are prohibited, if you are insulin-dependent, you can carry a glucose measuring device in your carry-on bag. And even syringes. If you suffer from asthma and require an inhaler, they will also make an exception. But in all cases, bring a medical report and appropriate prescriptions.
The ideal content of a carry-on luggage
11. If it is a work or business trip, do not pack excessive amounts of shirts, blazers and suits. The public image consultant, Álvaro Gordoa, recommends making strategic combinations. Combine neutral colors, modify presentation patterns with accessories and use double straps. The suit bags are lightweight and work very well as a carry-on bag. But use a non-metal hanger to avoid problems at the airport. Pack shoes that match the clothes you bring, so with a couple or two is enough.
12. To protect the shoes, wrap them in plastic. The portal Mejores Mudanzas (Best Moving) recommends using bathing caps as bags because they isolate the footwear from the rest of the luggage. To take advantage of the space they occupy, fill them with socks and small objects. They protect the content and will not lose their shape.
13. There are items you can get at the hotel and it is not worth packing them in your carry-on luggage. This is the case with towels. Youtuber Óscar de Gurú recommends choosing microfiber sports and traveler towels. They are light, absorbent and dry quickly.
14. Surely you have to bring material for your presentations or want to read something on your trip to entertain yourself. To save space and lighten your cabin suitcase, download your books to the tablet or search for information in e-book format. Convert the printed documents to files, take them in the kindle, a pendrive or upload them to the cloud. On the portal Un Gran Viaje, you will know about the benefits of using electronic formats.
15. One last tip to successfully organize your carry-on bag: always place heavy objects at the bottom, near the wheels. That way they won’t compress the light pieces. Place the cotton, silk and linen clothes above, and the raincoat, wool and heavy fabrics below.
Follow these recommendations according to your needs and you will have a lighter and organized carry-on luggage, that takes care of your belongings. There will even be room to bring some wonderful souvenirs on the return trip.
